Planets are opaque bodies, which continuously revolve around & are lighted by sun. There are eight planets in the solar system. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

There are two types of planets. According to their constituents and position, they are

  1. Inner planet
  2. Outer planet
INNER PLANETOUTER PLANET
These are called as Rock planets. These are nearer to sun. These are called as Gaseous planets. These are far away from the sun.
These have very few or no natural satellites. These have a number of natural satellites.
These move faster & have a shorter period of revolution. These move slowly & have a longer period of revolution.

MERCURY

This is the smallest & innermost planet. It has no atmosphere. It doesn’t have any satellite.

VENUS

It is seen in the East in morning & in the West in the evening. It is called as Morning & Evening star. It is the brightest object in solar system. It contains 90-95% Carbon Dioxide, Rotates from East to West & it has no natural satellites.

EARTH

The Earth is called as Blue planet due to presence of water. It is the densest of all and is unique for the presence of higher forms of life. Moon is the only satellite.

MARS

It is called as Red planet. It has a thin atmosphere comprising of Nitrogen & Argon. It has two natural satellites like Phobos & Deimos.

JUPITER

It is the largest planet in the solar system. It contains Hydrogen, Helium, Methane & Ammonia. A great red spot is detected on it. It has 67 satellites.

SATURN

It is the second largest planet & surrounded by a set of eight rings, which are made up of dust & ice particles. It has 62 satellites.

URANUS

It is unique and surrounded by 9 faint rings. It has 27 satellites.
