SEPAK – To smash or kick & TAKRAW – Ball. It is a very popular game of Southeast Asia. It is also called as foot volleyball or kick volleyball. This game is played using a synthetic ball which is called as Rattan ball. Since 1990, Sepak Takraw is also included in Asian games.
First this game was originated in Malaysia in 15th century. It is mostly played by the Royal Court. Primarily the game was known as Sepak Raga. Latter it was called as Sepak Raga Jaring. In 1965 it was formally named as Sepak Takraw.
RULES & REGULATIONS
The rule of this game mostly similar to volley ball. The main objective is to hit the ball by head & leg over the net on to the floor of opponents court to score a point.
This game played between 2 teams & each team have 3 players. Each of them play the role of Server/Feeder/Striker.
- SERVER – This person always serves the ball by leg to opponent’s court.
- FEEDER – This person always tries to pass the ball to the striker by head or leg.
- STRIKER – This person always strikes the ball by leg over the net.
The height of the net is 6 feet. Service will change after three consecutive points. In a match there are three sets. The team which scores 25 points win the set. In between two sets there was a 2 minutes break. The team that wins 2 sets wins the match.
Now a days it is a popular game in Asian countries & also in some European & American countries like Malaysia, Japan, India, Philippines, Thailand, USA, Brunei, & Indonesia. It is going to be more popular day by day.
