When the mental health i.e. thinking, mood , feeling, behavior & expressions are affected then it is called as mental illness. Mental illness is also called as mental health disease & mental health disorder. Let us know how we will identify that who is suffering from mental illness.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS
Mental illness affects not only mental, but also physical health. There are some signs & symptoms of mental illness. They are …
- Feeling sad , lonely & depressed.
- Hallucination – A fake perception of having seen, touched, tasted & smelled something.
- Delusion – Fake believe & detachment from reality . ex -Person believes that some one wants to harm him.
- Changes in eating habits.
- Excessive excitement or anger.
- Suddenly mood change from anxiety to depression & vice-versa.
- Phobia – An extreme fear of some thing ex – Fear of height is called as acrophobia.
- Loss of concentration & confused thinking.
- Inability to cope with daily life problems & Excessive feelings of guilty.
- Suicidal thoughts.
In case of mental illness our nervous system is not working properly. So there is an hormone imbalance occurs. So it may leads to physical illness i.e. stomach pain, headache & back pain etc.
TYPES OF MENTAL ILLNESS
Mental illness are classified into various types . Some major types are
- BIPOLAR DISORDER
- PSYCHOTIC DISORDER
- OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder )
- PERSONALITY DISORDER
- POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
- SEXUAL & GENDER DISORDER
In case of anxiety, on seeing something the person is suddenly panicked or overexcited. It is an emotional state, unpleasant in nature, associated with uneasiness, discomfort and concern or fear about some defined or undefined future threat.
Major depression is characterized by symptoms like sad mood, loss of interest and pleasure, low energy, worthlessness, guilt, change in appetite & sleep, suicidal thoughts.
In this disorder suddenly mood swings occur from high ( anxiety ) to low ( depression ) or vice-versa.
This is a mental disorder characterized by a disconnection from the reality. These are two types 1. PSYCHOSES – These are severe psychiatric illness in which the patient do not differentiate between the existing & non existing. 2 . NEUROSES – These are less serious; ability to comprehend reality is not lost, though the patient may undergo extreme suffering.
This is also known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Obsession – disturbing in thoughts Compulsion – disturbing daily routine .In this disease patient are plagued by constant thoughts or fears of somethings . EX- A person with an unreasonable fear of germs constantly washes his or her hands.
In this disorder the person always feels himself guilty & avoids to gatherings & friend circle.
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
This type of disorder can develop after an traumatic event such as unexpected death of some relatives, natural disaster & sexual assault . Patient is frightened by recalling those traumatic events.
SEXUAL & GENDER DISORDER
In this disorder it affect sexual desire it means maybe excessive sexual desire & may be loss of sexual desire. Also it affects gender identity. It means we know the person is male but that person do not recognize it & wants to change its gender.
From the above we conclude that mental illness is a serious problem but we neglect it . i.e. a person wants to change its gender then our society will blame him /her & it may leads to generate suicidal thoughts . Please realize that how mental health is important for us . So don’t blame mentally ill people , cooperate them to consult the physician & psychologists.
