A small fold or ridge of tissue which supports or checks the motion of the part to which it is attached, in particular a fold of skin beneath the tongue, or between the lip and the gum. Frenulum is also present in penis.
FUNCTION OF FRENULUM OF TONGUE
- It has a special impact on tongue function and is often linked to systemic, genetic, or developmental conditions.
- Mainly Frenulum is important for the attachment of the tongue to the base of the hyoid bone .
- It is also important for the movement of tongue.
Tongue–tie / ankyloglossia is a condition in which an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tie up to the bottom of the tongue’s tip to the floor of the mouth.
If necessary, tongue-tie can be treated with a surgical cut to release the frenulum. It is called as frenotomy.
