Dr. Ashok Kumar Mohapatra was born in the rural area like Biragobindapur village. This village comes under Satyabadi block of Puri District. He belongs to an average family. His father was a police constable & mother was a housewife.
He started his primary education at Biragobindapur primary school, moved towards Bhargabi high school, Narasinghapur & SCS college, Puri. He joined his MBBS degree in 1975 at MKCG Berhampur. He completed his MS (1979), M.ch (Neurosurgery)(1982) & worked in All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi from 1975 in different capacity upto post of professor. Then he Joined as Director of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar from 13/08/2012 to 12/10/2016 & now he is the Vice chancellor of SoA university, BBSR.
He came across electric light while he was in MKCG. Before he had managed his study with kerosin lights like lamp, lantern & even with diya lights. It is a matter to imagine how he continued his study in such a measurable condition. It is said that ” NO LABOUR GOES UNREWARDED ” & it is reflected in his life .
In 1980 he became the head of the department of Neurosurgery all over India. He has published more than 600 papers & 15 books . For that he was honoured as DSc. He is also awarded for Best Neurosurgeon of India. He has also carried out various international and national research in the field of Neurosurgery. He is well known pediatric neurosurgeon in India as well as in the world for the success of Jaga Balia Neuro surgery.
